Corporate Responsibility Report and Environmental Policy

Introduction

Rivacold UK Ltd is concerned with the supply of refrigeration plant and equipment to the commercial and industrial refrigeration sectors. Our principle activities include the import and distribution of finished and part finished products via our Tewkesbury facilities.

We recognise that our operations have an effect on the local, regional and global environment and that we have a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We wish to minimise the potentially harmful effects of such activity wherever and whenever possible. We also recognise that good environmental management must be an integral and fundamental part of our corporate business strategy.

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods, with regular review points. We will encourage customers, suppliers and staff to do the same.

We understand that our activities are an integral element of an integrated supply chain and that we must align our policies to those of our suppliers, customers and other stakeholders.

We are committed to responsible and sustainable resourcing and to conducting business in an ethical and socially responsible manner.

We are committed to supporting our local community and to being a good neighbour.

Our policies also impact on our employees. We are committed to increasing our employees’ awareness of our environmental policies and how their own actions contribute to our overall environmental performance.

Environmental policy

Our policy is to meet or exceed all environmental regulations, laws and codes of practice. We are committed to the prevention of pollution and to minimising the impact of our operations on the local, regional and global environment. This environmental policy is the company’s statement of environmental goals which outline our commitment to continual environmental improvement.

  • We will actively seek to use environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources to meet our needs wherever possible. We will seek to reduce our year on year energy consumption which will be measured and externally reported in an annual environmental report. (Carbon footprint)

  • We will improve our environmental performance by conserving energy, water, wood, paper and other resources, particularly those which are scarce or non-renewable, through efficient use and careful planning, while still providing a safe and comfortable working environment.

    • All usage will be measured and externally reported in an annual environmental report.

    • Lights, computers and electrical equipment will be switched off when not in use. Internal climate conditions will be adjusted with energy consumption in mind.

    • Paper use will be minimised at all times. Printing of emails unless absolutely necessary will be discouraged.

    • We will reduce packaging as much as possible changing from timber based to lower impact cardboard or minimal packaging wherever possible.

    • Our water consumption will be measured and initiatives put in place to reduce where possible.

    • We will evaluate the environmental impact of any new equipment intended for use in our operations. We will seek to buy environmentally friendly and energy efficient products.

    • All cleaning materials to be used in our operations will be as environmentally friendly as possible.

  • We are aware of the potential harmful impacts that refrigerant gasses can have on the environment. We will therefore consider the environmental impacts of our products at all stages of their life cycle - from design, to manufacturing, customer use, and finally disposal.

    • Energy efficient and streamlined production processes, together with the latest technology available to improve running costs, energy efficiency and longevity of product will be incorporated in all new product designs.

    • We will work in collaboration with our customers to supply them with products which operate using refrigerants which meet or exceed their environmental strategies to reduce carbon in their operations.

  • We will promote recycling and the use of recycled and refurbished products and materials where such alternatives are economical and suitable, while reducing consumption of materials wherever possible.

    • We will seek to source recycled and recyclable paper products.
    • We will reuse and recycle all paper where possible.

  • We will minimise waste, especially hazardous waste, in all our operations and product development and we will dispose of all waste through safe and responsible methods.

    • We will only use licensed and appropriate organisations to dispose of waste, with specific emphasis on recycling.

  • We will ensure that any products used or derived from wildlife, such as timber and plants, are from sustainable sources, and comply with EU and international trading rules.

  • We will work with our suppliers to ensure they recognise and reduce the environmental impact of their products and transportation through a quality purchasing policy.

  • Through coordinating route planning and delivery schedules we will seek to realise the dual benefits of reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.

    • We will reduce the need to travel, restricting to necessity trips only. Public transport will always be considered if practicable.

    • We will promote the use of travel alternatives such as e-mail or video/phone conferencing.

    • We will make additional efforts to accommodate the needs of those using public transport or bicycles.

    • We will use greener vehicles and maintain them rigorously.

    • Deliveries will be kept to a minimum and the use of multi-drop used where practicable.

  • We will monitor relevant discharges and emissions to air, land and water to assess what action is necessary to reduce pollution or the risk of pollution. We will phase out, where practical, ozone depleting substances and minimise the release of greenhouse gases, volatile organic compounds, vehicle emissions and other substances damaging to health and the environment.
  • We will ensure, where practicable, that buildings occupied by us are designed, constructed and operated to optimise their environmental performance.

  • We include environmental issues in all company training programmes and encourage the implementation by all company staff of sound environmental practices.

Quality policy (group)

For years Rivacold has been implementing a quality policy that focuses on customer satisfaction and company development. This in turn has led to the formalisation of dedicated procedures to achieve specific objectives:

  • to link the Rivacold brand to quality standards of the highest level and to make it synonymous with conformity to national and international legislation;

  • to optimise in-house and outside resources to prevent errors, delays and inefficiency;

  • to study and experiment the most leading-edge technologies available in the marketplace for a concept of refrigeration with a lower impact on the environment

In accordance with its quality policy, Rivacold pursues three main objectives:

  • to identify customer needs for total satisfaction of customer expectations;

  • to involve and increase staff awareness with regard to a culture of quality management;

  • to improve organisation, the working environment and the technologies used in order to increase Rivacold efficiency levels in terms of company and products

Certification

In order to meet the above commitments Rivacold SRL have implemented a quality management system which conforms to the requirements of the standard UNI EN ISO 9001:2000.

The manufacture of condensing units, hermetic systems, monoblock systems, split systems, multicompressor packs and heat exchangers also complies with the directive 97/23/EC (P.E.D.).

Health and Safety

We are committed to the health, safety and welfare of our employees. We will ensure that our activities are safe for all concerned with, or impacted by, our business.

Climate change

We recognise that the impact of climate change is one of mankind’s greatest challenges and that we must do all we can to reduce our own carbon footprint and that of the supply chain we are integral part of.

  • We are committed to working with our suppliers to help reduce their carbon emissions which impact on our own carbon footprint. We will seek to buy goods and services which will have the minimum environmental impact on our business and comply with all legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Within our own business operations we take all possible measures to minimise the direct impact on our carbon footprint.

  • We collaborate with our customers to ensure that the products we supply contribute towards their targets on carbon reduction.

Business ethics

We will conduct our business in an ethical and socially responsible manner.

  • Suppliers, customers, employees and other stakeholders will be treated with respect in an honest and fair manner.

  • We will ensure transparency in all we do with constant and open channels of communication.

Our people and our community

Our employees are our greatest asset.  We are committed to treating them correctly and fairly, and to applying sound principles of equality and diversity. We want them to reach their full potential and we will provide them with the necessary tools, a good working environment, the necessary training, and a mutually beneficial work-life balance to achieve this.

We are committed to supporting our local community and to being a good neighbour.

  • We will use local labour and materials where available to reduce carbon emissions and to help the community.

Implementation and Communication

To be successful, our environmental policy statement needs to be company-wide and therefore commitment is required from the whole workforce. Our Operations Director has specific responsibility for policy development, coordination, evaluation and measurement of performance. Line managers have an important role to play in helping employees to understand and implement the relevant aspects of this policy in their day-to-day work through the regular communication of objectives, action plans and achievements. This will be achieved through team meetings, email bulletins and training sessions to raise awareness and encourage best practice.

  • We will involve staff in the implementation of this policy, for greater commitment and improved performance, and provide them with relevant training.

  • We will work with suppliers, contractors and sub-contractors to improve their environmental performance.

  • We will maintain records of our environmental performance and make them available to our customers and stakeholders on our company web site.

Review

This environmental policy will be reviewed annually at a formal corporate business strategy meeting and, if necessary, revised to reflect the latest developments. We will conduct an annual self-evaluation of our performance, in consultation with our staff, in implementing these principles and in complying with all applicable laws and regulations.

Annual targets will be set in order to achieve continuous improvement.

The results will be published on our company web site.
